Most of today’s concrete blocks have an even or smooth surface, but from the late 1800’s until the 1930’s, a unique concrete block was manufactured that, from the outside, resembled stone. These are called rusticated or rock-faced blocks. We usually see them used as foundation and garage walls and, in rare occasions in upstate NY, as the exterior of an entire building. Unfortunately when they break or deteriorate, they are often replaced with smooth block, resulting in an irregular appearance.
For homeowners proud of their property’s architectural detailing, replacing these blocks with smooth ones is almost sacrilegious in that it destroys a portion of the homes character. It’s difficult if not impossible to locate a craftsman or mason with the skills (and interest) in making authentic repairs.
Rustic Concrete Block Manufacturer Found!
I came across a company that still manufactures the blocks using a mold, just as they did one hundred years ago.
Classic Rock Face Block (www.ClassicRockFaceBlock.com) creates rustic concrete blocks of various sizes and patterns, all cast from original molds.
While I’m not certain that ordering a few block is practical for everyone, for those who are dedicated to maintaining the integrity of historic or older homes, it can be a proud investment that will only add to the appeal of their property.
